History of Grama Panchayat
Thalavady Grama Panchayat is one of the prominent rural panchayats in Alappuzha district. Agriculture, water resources, religious harmony, and social progress together form the unique identity of Thalavady.
Historical Background
The Thalavady region was once part of the administrative territory of the former Travancore Kingdom. Influenced by the Pamba River and the Kuttanad region, an agriculture-based rural lifestyle developed here. Paddy cultivation, coconut farming, banana cultivation, and vegetable farming became the main sources of livelihood for the people.
With the strengthening of the Gram Panchayat system in Kerala as part of local self-governance, Thalavady Grama Panchayat was established. The Panchayat has played a major role in public participation, development projects, infrastructure improvement, drinking water supply, roads, healthcare, and education.
Social and Cultural Life
The Thalavady region is well known for the harmonious coexistence of Hindu, Christian, and Muslim communities. Numerous temples, churches, and mosques reflect the rich cultural heritage of the village. Celebrations such as Onam, Vishu, Christmas, and Eid stand as examples of communal unity and harmony.
Education and Development
Government schools, anganwadis, health centers, Kudumbashree activities, and women empowerment programs have greatly contributed to the social development of Thalavady. The Panchayat continues to progress through initiatives such as Haritha Keralam, sanitation missions, and annual development projects.
Special Features
The natural beauty of Thalavady is highlighted by its vast paddy fields and abundant water resources. A traditional lifestyle centered around agriculture and rural living still continues to thrive in the region.
